This past week has been one of work, exploration and sunburn.
We have really begun to get our Public Relations proposals ready for Sapphire. In addition to this, Jillian and I took over the UA in the Caribbean social medias on Tuesday. This turned out to be more work than I expected. I have posted media content for an organization or group before, but navigating multiple social medias at once proved a new difficulty. One of the struggles we faced was making sure we were directing the content on each media towards that media’s trends. We also did not want to post the same content across all channels.
On our social media takeover day, the entire group traveled to Marigot Bay and Philipsburg. The morning in Marigot started with a hike up Fort Louis and some shopping through the local vendors. This was interesting because these vendors excel in making the customer want to buy their product. For example, when Jill almost passed on purchasing a hat, the vendor immediately lowered the cost of the item to a price Jill would be silly to pass up on. Next, the shopping scene and energy of Philipsburg were completely different. There were no vendors in the streets, but there were many different tourist or souvenir shops. Philipsburg is the area most cruise ships come into port, so the shops cater to cruise ship tourists, whether it is an expensive jewelry store or a smaller souvenir shop. Philipsburg also has a large beach area which I want to return to and visit for a day. Philipsburg is the area where Jillian and I found the most content for the takeover because it had different kinds of shops to beachside restaurants to local artists performing.
The next day we went out and interviewed locals and tourists about what they look for in the place they stay and if they have heard of Sapphire Beach Resort. I was in the group sent back to Marigot, but this time we focused on the mall and restaurants in Marigot rather than the vendors. Most people we talked to did not have a great experience with Sapphire.
After a few days full of tours, classwork and research we had our rhino safari day, and let me just tell you—sunburn. Due to our blistering skin and painful tomato red splotches all over our bodies our next day ferrying to St. Barths was a great opportunity to experience high-end brand advertising and avoid the sun. I would love to work in fashion advertising or marketing one day. These high-end stores like Prada, Hermes and Louis Vuitton put detail and thought into every inch of their store and sales associates. I noticed how they placed their nicer, more expensive products towards the front of the store and in areas customers are more likely to look. The sales associates are also very skilled in noticing what customers show an interest to and catering the rest of the products they show to that particular interest. Visiting St. Barths was my favorite day this week because I loved the reputation and standard the shops and restaurants hold themselves to. I would love to work with those shops and further establish their reputations.
Until next time, Olivia Pickens
