As I sit back and reflect on my final week in St. Maarten, I’m filled with a strange mix of emotions—gratitude, pride, and just a touch of sadness. This trip has been one of the most eye-opening, growth-filled experiences I’ve ever had, both personally and academically. From our PR-focused class sessions to unforgettable memories made outside the classroom, I’m walking away with more than just new passport stamps—I’m leaving with fresh knowledge, real-world insight, and friendships I’ll always cherish.

Class this week definitely pushed me, especially when we started working with Sprinklr, a platform I wasn’t too familiar with before. At first, it felt like trying to learn a new language in a short amount of time—tracking data, analyzing social listening reports, and understanding how to break that all down into insights that matter. It was challenging, no doubt. But honestly, that challenge turned into one of the biggest learning moments of the trip. I got to see how brands use these tools to shape their public image, monitor audience engagement, and make smarter campaign decisions. The hands-on experience made it all click eventually, and I realized that these are the kinds of skills that set you apart in the real PR world.

One of the highlights of our campaign project was diving deep into Simpson Bay and exploring it through the lens of the APR principles. I learned how to analyze a destination not just as a tourist, but as a communicator—someone responsible for crafting narratives, understanding audiences, and making strategic recommendations. Simpson Bay isn’t just a quiet beach; it’s a peaceful yet vibrant spot that deserves way more recognition. Using the RPIE model, we thought critically about how to reposition Simpson Bay as a one-stop vacation destination for both older travelers and younger generations. It made me realize how much power public relations holds in shaping perceptions and influencing travel decisions.

Of course, it wasn’t all work. The dinner cruise on our last night was the perfect cherry on top. Sailing across the calm waters at sunset with the people I’d grown so close to over the last few weeks felt surreal. The island breeze, the music, the laughter—it was one of those moments that makes you pause and feel deeply thankful. We weren’t just classmates by the end of the trip—we were friends who had shared challenges, celebrated wins, and grown together.

This week, and really this whole trip, reminded me of why I chose public relations in the first place. It’s about connecting with people, telling stories that matter, and constantly learning. I’m walking away from St. Maarten with new tools in my PR toolbox, a deeper appreciation for cultural storytelling, and lifelong memories. This experience was more than just a class—it was a defining chapter in my college journey. I’ll carry everything I’ve learned and felt here with me as I take on the next steps in my journey—more confident, more inspired, and more ready than ever. P.S. Skylar, I can't wait to take your position xoxo
