Goodbye St. Maarten

I am currently writing my fourth and final blog in my bedroom back in Miami Beach. In a month I feel I have learned much more than I was expecting. Not just about school but myself. I am so grateful that I had an amazing opportunity to see a new country and grow as a person.

Going to Sint Maarten I am not sure what I was expecting. I know for a fact I didn’t think I would be finding a home. Driving on Andre’s bus I can look out the window and know where I am. I have vivid memories of the places I see.

Starting the final week strong was everyone’s favorite activity, karaoke! It was a night I don’t think I will ever forget. It was a magical night. Everyone singing and enjoying each other company. At last call we all jumped into the pool fully clothed.

This week in groups we really dived into the final project. My group is the Rhum Runners! With Kyra, Taylor, and Maddison. Using our Sprinklr skills that we gained from the prior weeks. The software is very complex. It is used to learn about data for public relations. I enjoy looking through the different stats and kind of people that post about Sint Maarten.

On the first week of getting to Sint Maarten my computer crashed. It was at the repair shop for the entire trip. On the last week the shop still hadn’t gotten the parts to fix my computer. Which was a little disappointing but it is what it is. On the adventure to get my compter we had lunch at Skip Jacks! It is one of the best seafood restaurants on the island. It was definitely the best fish and chips I had ever eaten. Definitely worth the trip to get my broken computer.

I spend many of my nights swimming by the pool. I like talking to the other hotel guest. Many are very interesting people from all over the world. Many of the people are French. This encouraged me to start my journey of learning French! I am two weeks into practicing. I use an app called duo lingo. It has every language a person can think of!

My last night in Sint Maarten is one I will never forget. We all went to a dinner cruise. On the boat we danced the night away and ate delicious food. I had the mahi mahi in a wonderful lemon sauce. The other ladies on the bought taught us dances to the songs being played. We even had a conga line going for a bit! The crewmen put on strobe lights! It was definitely a party like no other.

Thank you Dr. Hayes and Dr. Vandyke. For making this abroad trip possible. I am excited to see what you do next year with the group. I am also thankful for all of the students on this trip for making it such an exciting month. I hope to see everyone in Tuscaloosa!
