Our first week in Sint Martin has already been filled with experiences that are unforgettable. I have already had the opportunity to spend some time on this island with my mom, however we stayed in the hotel proximities the whole time. I knew that Sint Martin is more underdeveloped but being able to explore it shows me a whole new perspective.
On our first day here, we explored around the hotel and the neighboring towns. Something that really stood out to me was at the grocery store. The manager immediately approached me with a piece of paper of all the store info and some phone numbers. He was telling me that he can deliver groceries to wherever we might need. He was VERY enthused about it. First, I can’t remember the last time I was out in public, and someone handed me a flyer of some sort. Now it’s always “scan this QR code” or “give us a follow”. Even though some places around this island do have privileges, some do not. Immediately I was aware that some businesses must rely on this as their way of advertisements. Secondly, I was just shocked to have someone be this excited to share his personal information for any help we might need.
This being the first real interaction with a business manager on the island really set the tone for how it works around here. Everyone has been surprisingly personable and genuine with their efforts to sell whatever it may be.
Continuing through the week, I experienced similar interactions wherever we went. Especially the networking between business supporting business. At our hotel, the workers have told us to “go to this bar” or “try this restaurant”. Yes, even though this might feel common, it feels oddly more genuine here. Word of mouth is a major way of advertising here.
In one of the first classes since being here, I was taking notes on the implications of social media on marketing influences. In bolded words on my notes, it says conversation=relationships. Well, In Sint Martin (most of the time) it STARTS with conversations and ends with them. It doesn’t start with an Instagram blast or tweet. In order to build that trust with you and your costumer you need to have those conversations. This is also why I feel as if the overall vibe for businesses feels more genuine.
On Friday we visited Philipsburg, the Dutch capitol of Sint Martin. Here we especially were able talk to businesses.....and do a little shopping. Me, MK, and Amari decided to walk down this little side street, and we ended up going into this cute local jewelry store. I was looking for a store like this, so I was very excited. The lady immediately jumped up and started telling us all about the rings we were looking at. She was telling us they were the Sint Martin island stone….(she sold us on that) We continued talking to her about why we were here and she quickly handed us her business card. Since she knew we were here learning about AD and PR, she felt pretty confident telling us to “spread the word”. I told her not to worry we will!
This week has been nothing short of learning experiences and fun memories....can not wait for the rest of this trip!
