Our first week in Sint Maarten has gone way above my expectations. I never would have thought that we could connect advertising and public relations to this Caribbean lifestyle.

I’m here taking two exciting classes:International Public Relations and Social Media Analytics & Tourism Marketing, and it’s the perfect location to combine academics with adventure. From the moment we landed, the island’s beauty and energy have made every day feel like a dream.

We kicked off our trip on Monday by heading straight to the beach. The clear blue water and warm sand made it the perfect spot to relax after traveling. That evening, we all hung out at the resort for karaoke, a Monday night tradition. This was an unforgettable way to bond with the group and shake off any first-day nerves.

Tuesday was packed with exploration. We went on a five hour island tour that took us all over Sint Maarten, visiting both the Dutch and French sides. Each stop had something unique to offer. From scenic overlooks and bustling towns to quiet beaches and local markets. It really helped me get a sense of the island’s culture and layout.

On Wednesday, we started the morning with class, learning how we can connect a new culture we have emerged into advertising and public relations. We also were introduced to a group project where each group is assigned a different beach in Sint Maarten. This beach becomes a new “client” that we have to present to the public. It is a great beach to visit in Sint Maarten. Our group was assigned Mullet Bay Beach. I am really excited to dive further into the research for this project. After class, we hit the beach again and explored some natural caves nearby. The combination of education and real-world immersion is exactly why I wanted to study abroad.

Thursday might have been my favorite day yet. We spent the day on a catamaran, cruising around the island. We made several stops to swim and snorkel in crystal-clear water. Jumping off the boat, floating in the sea, and swimming into lunch for some delicious ribs.

Back in the classroom on Friday, we worked on our project more and prepared to take our research and ask questions to the locals around that beach for the next week of class. That afternoon, we explored the area around our hotel, checking out some local shops and boutiques. That night, our group went out on the town together, a fun way to celebrate our first full week.

Saturday was rainy, so we took the opportunity to slow down. Most of us relaxed and caught up on rest before dressing up and heading to a nice dinner in the evening. It was a great reminder that balance is important on a trip like this.

Sunday was all about recharging. We spent the day lounging by the pool and preparing for the exciting week ahead. I'm already looking forward to more hands-on learning, island adventures, and of course, soaking up as much of Sint Maarten as I can.

One week in, and I already know this study abroad experience will be one of the most memorable parts of my college journey.
